For the first time, mothers-to-be can “just add water” for a low-impact pregnancy workout at the Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre.

Christchurch City Council Customer and Programmes Manager Jacquie Hibbs says the pilot aqua natal programme recognises that staying fit and active during pregnancy boosts both physical and mental well-being.

Pregnant women can take part in aqua natal classes at Pioneer Pool.

“It is the first time that we have offered an aqua natal programme in Christchurch,” Mrs Hibbs says.

“We have introduced the trial programme to encourage more pregnant women to maintain their fitness with specialist water-based workouts while enjoying the company of other mums-to-be.”

The aqua natal programme helps women cope with the pressure on their bodies during pregnancy by providing a buoyant environment for exercise and easing the stress on weight-bearing joints.

“It is also a great opportunity to meet other women who are going through the same experience,” Mrs Hibbs says.

The aqua natal programme targets mobility and muscle tone while promoting healthy body awareness and improved well-being.

All of the 45-minute classes, which are led by an experienced instructor, are taken in the water to ensure maximum benefits.

Participants start with a basic movement warm-up before focusing on lower body movement and water-resistance work for the upper body. A relaxation session winds up the class.

“We also want to build a sense of community during pregnancy, supporting women in the months leading up to birth – and beyond – to stay fit and connected,” Mrs Hibbs says.

The aqua natal workout programme gently kicks off on 24 June, and is free for Recreation and Sport Centre members. Classes will be held at 6.45pm on Mondays.
