A new changing facility has been proposed for Sumner beach and locals are being asked what kind of designs should be on exterior walls.

The changing area will give beach goers a private place to get changed and will ease pressure on the public toilets on The Esplanade near Marriner St.

A new changing room block is planned for Sumner Beach.

A new changing room block is planned for Sumner Beach.

The proposed site for the structure is also on The Esplanade, along from Cave Rock and near the existing toilet block.

It will be made from stainless steel and will have four separate changing cubicles with a rubber mat floor.

The design is relocatable so it can be moved in the future if required.

Its outside walls will feature imagery that reflects the local community and Christchurch City Council is asking for feedback and ideas on what this should look like.

Council Head of Parks Andrew Rutledge says the new changing rooms will benefit locals and visitors. “Sumner is very popular with surfers and swimmers and having somewhere for them to get changed is important.

“Many of our other recreational beaches already have a changing facility so this is definitely going to be a practical addition for the area.

"However, we would really like the structure to fit in with its surroundings as much as possible and look appealing both for visitors and the local community. That's why we're asking for ideas about how the outside of the changing block could look.”

To make comments or suggestions go to the Council's Have Your Say page. Submissions close at 5pm on Monday 27 May.

Once consultation has closed a report will be presented to the Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board. Imagery concepts for the changing facility will be developed for the Board’s approval.
