Soaring temperatures and strong winds are forecast for this week as a fire ban remains in place.

Temperatures are expected to reach the high 20s – accompanied by gusty north-west winds – before slightly cooler conditions on Friday bring some respite.

Highs of 28 degrees are forecast for today and tomorrow, with 26 degrees expected on Wednesday before the city swelters on Thursday as the temperature peaks at 29 degrees.

Christchurch faces a sizzling week of high temperatures.

Despite the fire ban, several bonfires and rubbish fires have been reported.

Several car fires have also caused problems, including one that spread to hedges and structures.

The fire ban prohibits any outdoor fires in both rural and urban areas.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) Integrated Risk Manager Darrin Woods says it is important that people continue to take precautions and check any old fires on their properties.

“This fire season is still not over, especially along the coastal corridor north of Christchurch where conditions remain very dry,” he says.

Mr Woods says the fire risk remains high across the region.

“There is still the potential for sustained and deep-seated burning,” he says. “It will take time for grass fuels to green up, despite recent rains.”

Roadside vegetation also remains very dry in many places.

“People are urged to take care when travelling, ensuring that they do not pull over onto the side of the road and park in tall, dry vegetation,” he says.

A fire ban is also in place for the Selwyn, Waimakariri and Hurunui districts.

Barbecues and gas-operated appliances are allowed but people are encouraged to visit the Check It’s Alright website to determine the rules for their area.

Anyone who sees smoke or fire should dial 111 immediately.
