Roto Kohatu Reserve is a popular recreational spot, particularly in the summer.

Two permanent toilet blocks will be added to Roto Kohatu Reserve as part of a landscape upgrade of the popular recreational area.

The Harewood reserve has the largest body of fresh water suitable for swimming in Christchurch and is a busy spot on hot summer days, but up until now it has only had port-a-loos in place for toilet facilities.

Following consultation with the community, the Council has today approved plans to add two toilet blocks to the reserve and to upgrade the parking area and driveway.

the work in the reserve is planned to start in October with the toilets opened for summer. It is also anticipated to have the car park improvement completed by this time but that will be dependent on gaining all required consents and contractor availability.

Loan for Burnside Rugby Club

The Burnside Rugby Club is going to get a $75,000 loan from the Council so it can earthquake strengthen its changing rooms.

The loan will be made through the Council’s Community Loan Scheme, which provides low-interest finance to assist not-for-profit community organisation to improve or develop new or existing sport, recreation or community facilities.

The Burnside Rugby Club will use its loan to help meet the costs of bringing its changing rooms up from 33 per cent of New Building Standard (NBS) to 100 per cent of NBS.

It will have 10 years to repay the loan and will only be charged an interest rate of 4.5 per cent a year.

School speed zone extended

The school speed zone outside Hoon Hay Primary School and Our Lady of the Assumption School is going to be extended.

The two schools have frontages on both Sparks Road and Hoon Hay Road but at the moment the variable 40kmh speed limit only applies to Sparks Road.

On the recommendation of the Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board, the Council has decided to extend the school speed zone to also include part of Hoon Hay Road.
