Central city, Things to do  |  14 Jan 2019

Bread & Circus has rolled into Christchurch for a jam-packed month of amazing acts.

The first 10 days of Christchurch’s reimagined World Buskers Festival are the biggest and there are plenty of opportunities to get in on the early acts.

In all, 52 acts – many new to the festival – will deliver 527 performances.  Ticketed events and festival pitches across the central city – complemented by free roving performances – will power the month-long summer party in a citywide theatre of fun.

From a spectacular contemporary circus cabaret to theatrical surprises with a foodie twist, Christchurch audiences are in for a sensory feast.

Six busking pitches, a stunning Spiegeltent, roving shows, a festival hub and a pub choir are among the festival highlights.

LIMBO started the party with a dazzling display in the Spiegeltent on the corner of Worcester Boulevard and Oxford Terrace, capturing the audience with an unworldly show of stunning stunts and acrobatics.

Piff the Magic Dragon – a magician who keeps audiences spellbound around the world – was also among the first performers on opening day.

Both LEO: The Anti-Gravity Show – a mind-bending performance piece that tests perceptions of reality – and Hot Brown Honey – an empowering mash-up of music, dance and cabaret – have also been thrilling festival crowds.

For those who love a surprise, a Feast of Fools on 19 January will offer a masked moving feast coupled with theatrical adventures.

The new-look festival also welcomes back a familiar face, local performer MulletMan. Recognised for both his comedy and standout haircut, MulletMan is celebrating his 13th festival appearance and looking forward to seeing the new festival organiser’s positive changes.

“The beauty of the busking side of the festival is that it ought to interact with people, locals or otherwise, spontaneously and magically, and I'd love to think that this happens to anyone who explores the city during the festival time,” he says.

Bread & Circus takes centre stage in Christchurch until Sunday 3 February.
