Christchurch has reaped the benefits of Phil Collins’ pulling power, with his only South Island concert drawing nearly 15,000 out-of-town fans to the city.

Phil Collins performed at Christchurch Stadium last month as part of his Not Dead Yet: Live! tour.

Those out-of-town fans spent more than $5.8 million in Christchurch while attending the former Genesis singer’s Not Dead Yet: Live! concert at Christchurch Stadium on 4 February.

“It was a fantastic concert and it was amazing to see Christchurch Stadium filled with more than 25,000 Phil Collins fans enjoying themselves and the beautiful summer’s night, says Vbase Board Chairman Councillor Tim Scandrett.

“Concerts like this one inject a lot of money into a city’s economy because they draw people from across the country,” adds Vbase General Manager Chris Mintern.

“People from out-of-town who attended the Phil Collins concert generated 24,786 visitor nights in Christchurch, which suggests they came for the concert but stayed on to do other things, which is exactly what we hoped would happen.

“Hotels, motels, bars, restaurants, cafes and shops all benefit when we can secure big events like this for Christchurch which is why Vbase is working hard to secure more big name acts for Christchurch,” Mr Mintern says.
