The kerbside collection of rubbish and recycling will continue as normal in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula under Alert Level 2.

“Please put your bins out on your normal collection day,’’ says Christchurch City Council Head of Three Waters and Waste Helen Beaumont.

“The recycling plant will be operating as usual so please help us to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by ensuring that you put only the right stuff in your yellow recycling bin.

“The only items that belong in the yellow bin are clean cardboard and paper, aluminium cans, metal tins, clear and coloured glass bottles and jars, aerosol cans, and clean, rigid plastic bottles and containers that have the recycling symbol 1, 2 or 5. All the items need to be clean and loose. All lids should go in the red bin.

“We have recently delivered a handy guide on recycling to every household so if you are unsure if an item belongs in the yellow bin, please check the guide or the Wheelie Bins app.

“You can also pick up a sticker that shows what can be recycled from Council service centres and libraries. The stickers are designed to go on the inside of your bin lid so you can check items as you put them in the bin,’’ Ms Beaumont says.

“We would really appreciate it if you could space your bins at least at half a metre apart when you’re putting them out for collection so that it is easy for our trucks to reach them.’’

Ms Beaumont says the EcoDrop transfer stations at Parkhouse Road, Bromley and Styx Mill will remain open under Alert Level 2. They will accept all standard payment methods - EFTPOS, credit card or cash.

“You will be able to drop off rubbish, greenwaste, hazardous items and select recycling any time during the operating hours of 7am to 4.30pm.  If you live on Banks Peninsula, the Barry’s Bay Transfer Station is operating under the normal winter hours.

“If you are visiting any of the transfer stations, please follow the Government’s guidance around physical distancing,’’ Ms Beaumont says.

The EcoShop on Blenheim Road will also operate as normal under Alert Level 2.
