A call for community feedback on two options for improving the safety of a busy Harewood intersection has led to about 1000 submissions being lodged with Christchurch City Council.

“We have had a huge response to our request for public submissions on the two options we are considering for improving the safety of the Harewood, Gardiners and Breens roads intersection,’’ says Council Senior Project Manager Brendan Bisley.

“Over the month-long consultation period we have received about 1000 submissions.  That’s a great level of community engagement and I want to thank everyone who took the time to send in submissions.

“Council staff will now begin the task of analysing those submissions so that they can prepare a report on the safety improvement options for elected members to consider,’’ Mr Bisley says.

The intersection of Harewood, Gardiners and Breens roads is rated among the top 100 dangerous intersections in Christchurch and local residents have been raising concerns about its safety for several years.

Early last month the Council announced it was looking at two options for improving the safety of the intersection and called on the public to share their views.

The first option involves closing the median on Harewood Road, making both Gardiners Road and Breens Road left turn in and left turn out only, and installing a traffic-light controlled pedestrian crossing.

This option costs about $400,000 and is preferred by the Council.

The second option involves installing traffic lights at the intersection at a cost of $l.2 million.
