Local body elections  |  27 Jan 2020

Mt Herbert voters have the chance to decide who will represent them on the Banks Peninsula Community Board, with voting now open in the February by-election.

Two independent candidates – Dawn Sutton and Scott Winter – are standing for election.

Voting closes at noon on Tuesday 18 February, and voting papers are now being delivered to enrolled Mt Herbert residents. The extraordinary vacancy has arisen because only one of the two positions representing Mt Herbert was filled in the October 2019 local government elections.

"As usual, this is a postal vote election, so it's easy to get informed and have your say," says Christchurch City Council Electoral Officer Jo Daly.

"If you're enrolled in Mt Herbert, keep an eye on your letterbox over the next week. You'll receive all the voting papers, which means you can read the candidate profiles, make your pick, and then return your vote in the Freepost envelope provided.

"To make sure we receive your vote in time, it's best to post it by Thursday 13 February. You can also deliver your vote in person before the close of voting to the Diamond Harbour Library, Lyttelton Library and Service Centre and the Council’s Civic Offices," Ms Daly says

Progress results will be available shortly after voting closes on 18 February.

Special voting facilities for people who are on the unpublished roll or have lost, or not received, their voting papers will be available, Monday to Friday from 27 January to noon on 18 February, from:

  • Lyttelton Library and Customer Services (Customer Services Desk), 18 Canterbury Street – 10am to 6pm.
  • The Council Civic Offices, 53 Hereford Street – 9am to 5pm.
  • The Electoral Officer on 03 941 8581 or jo.daly@ccc.govt.nz, who can post special voting papers on request.

Anyone not on the roll but who has lived in the Mt Herbert subdivision for more than one month and is over the age of 18 will need to complete a special vote. They can enrol or update their details by calling 0800 ENROL NOW (0800 36 76 56), visiting vote.nz or completing an enrolment form available from any NZ Post agency.
