Water restrictions have been lifted today on Banks Peninsula.

Residents in Akaroa, Duvauchelle and Takamatua have been under Level 4 water restrictions – a total ban on outdoor water use – since late February.

The streams that supply the townships with drinking water have been especially low due to low cumulative rainfall since last winter.

“The streams that supply drinking water to Akaroa, Duvauchelle and Takamatua have been particularly low this year, but with the recent rainfall and colder weather, we’ve seen gradual improvements to their flows, to the point they’re now sufficient and stable,” says Council Head of Three Waters and Waste Helen Beaumont.

“We’ve been monitoring stream levels multiple times a week to check when the restrictions could be lifted, and we’re very thankful for the ongoing patience and cooperation of residents while the restrictions have been in place.”
