Summer Sundays – Around the World
The free outdoor concert series, Summer Sundays, is kicking off this weekend for the first of four concerts. First up in in the music series is Around the World, featuring Mundi and Hera. Mundi’s music is a blend of Brazilian and African drums with an array of flutes, voice, dancing, guitar and bass. Hera is an award-winning Icelandic-Kiwi singer/songwriter who has a long musical history, travelling around the world with her guitar. Head down to Archery Lawn this Sunday from 2 – 4pm to check out the first session.
50th Celebration Commonwealth Games Exhibition
It’s been 50 years and it’s time to celebrate one of New Zealand’s greatest sporting events with all the people that made it the “Friendly Games.” Tūranga will be hosting an exhibition to celebrate this anniversary with images, stories and memorabilia from the 1974 Commonwealth Games. Come in and relive a wonderful time in Christchurch history, the exhibition is on until Sunday 18 February.
Toi Toi Opera – Goldie B. Locks and the Three Singing Bears
Toi Toi Opera kicks off the new year with an operatic telling of the story of Goldilocks by John Davies, based on the music of W. A. Mozart and J. Offenbach. Head down to The North Quad in the Arts Centre from 11am to midday Sunday for this heartwarming introduction to opera. This free event is part of Open Air, a relaxed programme of events at The Arts Centre running until early February.
Bread & Circus – World Buskers Festival
It’s the final weekend of one of the most highly anticipated and attended events on Christchurch’s summer calendar - The Bread & Circus World Buskers Festival! Get involved in Guru Dudu’s Silent Disco Walking Tours with a dance-walking tour through the streets of Christchurch; meet The Circus Firemen, a dynamic duo with a blazing blend of high-energy acrobatics, juggling and Australian comedy; or enter the realm of extraordinary entertainment with the unique Japanese international artist GAKU, a mesmerising fusion of juggling and percussion – and more!
Tūranga Creative Week & AR Experience
Calling all creative minds and budding artists! Make sure to check out the final days of Tūranga’s Creative Week & AR Experience from 10am – 4pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Christchurch Central Library’s fourth floor. This experience features a series of interactive activities showcasing Chrome Music Lab, music-themed Blookets and a live goose chase of Tūranga. The day includes a line up of interactive workshops, a Virtual Reality experience and a chance to learn from music industry experts. Find more information here.
