Looking for low-cost and family friendly ways to keep busy over the three-day weekend?

Alongside the New Zealand Agricultural Show, Addington Cup Week, and Cup and Show Week at Riccarton Park, there’s plenty of activities to enjoy with your family.  

Hoon Hay Fiesta

The Hoon Hay Fiesta is a free community event on Thursday night from 4.30-7pm at Hoon Hay Park to celebrate the vibrant community with a variety of exciting performances, delicious food and fun activities.

There will be plenty of things to keep you and your whānau entertained including bouncy castles, face painting, food and drink stalls, information stalls, performances, pony rides, archery and pedalmania.

The Extravaganza Fair Summer Tour

The Extravaganza Fair is on this Friday to Sunday, 9am – 5pm. Enjoy a community-centred event with a creative and sustainable focus! The Fair is a family affair with free entry for kids and gold coin entry for adults.

The weekend will include unique and interesting market stalls, arts and craft, food, musical entertainment, circus acts, interactive toys and games, and prizes up for grabs! Come along to Redzone Dallington, New Brighton Rd and Locksley Ave, to check it out.

Vintage Market at Avebury House

Head down to the front lawn of the beautiful Avebury House for the last vintage market of the year this Sunday. There will be stallholders with a selection of vintage items for you to search through: vinyl records, books, retro, clothing, antiques, collectibles, furniture, kitchenelia, china, crystals and plants!

Grab a coffee and a bite to eat, bring a rug to sit on the grass and relax while listening to a busker. Make sure your kids have their togs to enjoy the paddling pool and playground, and explore the green spaces around Avebury House. The market is cash only and will be open from 10am – 2pm.

Laneway Jazz Series – Under the Kitchen Sink

Relax and enjoy an open-air concert this Sunday afternoon at The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora. Grab a bite to eat from one of the Laneway Lunches eateries, pull up a bean bag and let the sounds get you into a summer mood.

Listen to Under the Kitchen Sink as they play a slick, sophisticated and refreshingly electric mix of jazz-infused originals, as well as fresh takes on classic jazz and blues standards. This free session is open to all ages.

Hornby Indoor Market

Explore all that’s on to offer at the Hornby Indoor Market this Saturday. Look over jewellery, artworks, crafts, plants, woodwork, bath and body products, candles, baby/children’s wear, knitting, home décor and more.

Enjoy the great atmosphere, have a bite to eat and sip on a coffee. The market will be on from 10am – 2pm at South Hornby Primary School hall, 35 Amyes Road.

Speedcubing Competition

Speedcubing is a competitive sport involving solving a range of twisty puzzles, such as the famous Rubik’s Cube, as quickly as possible!

From 9:30am – 7pm Saturday, head down to the Lyttelton Recreation Centre to watch competitors battle at Lyttelton Spring 2023 – an official World Cube Association sanctioned speedcubing competition.

Kaiwara Homestead open day

If you're after a drive out to the country side this long weekend,

Kaiwara Homestead is having an open weekend on the 18 and 19 November with all funds raised going to Cholmondeley Children’s Centre.

Just 10 minutes out of Culverden in North Canterbury, visitors can take a walk through the extensive garden, homestead and recently restored historic cook shop. There will be refreshments, live jazz music on both days, and a talk about the restoration of the original station, homestead and fernery. Children are welcome and can feed the geese, ducks, peacocks and pet lambs. 

Tickets are $20 for adults and include tea and coffee, children are free, and all proceeds go to Cholmondeley Children’s Centre.
