Set sail for the Botanic Gardens and a tale of blockbuster proportions as the Anthony Harper Summer Theatre returns this January.
The complete voyage of the RMS Titanic in 90 minutes is a hilarious, brand-new exploration of the iconic and ill-fated adventure. The show features three actors and a live musician and is co-created and performed by Lizzie Tollemache and Daniel Pengelly.
“The four of us will attempt to explore and perform the entire story in under 90 minutes. From Captain to cabin boy, first class buffet ice sculptures to how-did-you-not-see-that icebergs, we will cover it all,” Ms Tollemache says.
“The show is inspired by Monty Python, Black Adder and, of course, the cult classic Titanic film itself,” Mr Pengelly says.
Between them, Daniel and Lizzie have over 35 years of experience as performers, comedians and actors. The theatre veterans have produced five summer theatre shows between them, including Treasure Island, King Arthur and The Wizard of Oz.
“We love comedy. We love history. We love shows that invite audiences in and give them a chance to participate (but only if they want to!). By opening night, we will have 80% of it, the rest, well, that will be different every night – what could go wrong?” Mr Pengelly says.
“Masters of playing multiple roles, the cast of three will bring hundreds of characters to life. Each actor will also steer the action through the personas of a history buff, a Titanic film fanatic, and a hopeless romantic,” says Ms Tollemache.
“We know these shows need to be big, fun, fast and engaging, so that’s what people can expect to experience,” Mr Pengelly says.
The season runs from 9–26 January, with evening performances starting at 7pm and weekend matinees at 4pm.
Set in the Botanic Gardens, the show will be located for the first time at the Archery Lawn – home to the Summer Sundays concerts.
“We love the outdoor setting and the relaxed environment of families and friends around food and drink, enjoying a live show,” Ms Tollemache says.
“We feel Ōtautahi Christchurch is so lucky to have Anthony Harper Summer Theatre each and every year, providing accessible and entertaining theatre experiences in the central city for everyone to enjoy.”
All ages are welcome, although these shows are best enjoyed by ages 12 years and over. Anthony Harper Summer Theatre is a free event, but koha donations will be gratefully accepted by the theatre company, Rollicking Entertainment.
