Christchurch City Council’s Animal Shelter is closed following a positive test for parvovirus.
A dog that had been wandering on the street and was taken in by the Animal Shelter tested positive for parvovirus. As a result, the facility is being quarantined and will remain closed until further notice.
“The most stringent measures are in place to mitigate any possible spread to the dogs currently housed in the Shelter and we are working closely with the Ministry for Primary Industries to ensure that our processes and procedures are adequate to mitigate any further spread within the shelter,” Animal Services Manager Lionel Bridger says.
“The dogs have been tested on site and will be vaccinated against parvovirus on Friday.”
Owners who have a dog currently at the Animal Shelter can still claim their dog.
They are encouraged to have their dog seen to by a vet and should keep them quarantined for 14 days at home.
“We have heard a number of reports that there are further cases within the community, so we really want to encourage all dog owners to ensure that their pets are fully vaccinated” Mr Bridger says.
“We will update everyone as soon as the Shelter is reopened.”
*If you're planning to take your dog to the Pooch Pool Parties at Waltham Summer Pool or Templeton Summer Pool this weekend 1 to 2 April, your dog must be fully vaccinated.
