The new community facility under construction in Christchurch’s south-west will be officially known as Matatiki: Hornby Centre.
The Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board has voted to accept Ngāi Tūāhuriri’s gifted name of Matatiki for the new community facility that Christchurch City Council is building on land in Kyle Park, Hornby.
The new centre will be called Matatiki: Hornby Centre, in line with the Council’s naming convention for other similar facilities.
Matatiki means spring of water and represents the importance of water as a source of life and wellbeing.
“We are honoured that Ngāi Tūāhuriri has gifted us this name for our new community facility,’’ says Christchurch City Council Head of Recreation, Sports and Events Nigel Cox.
“The board’s acceptance of this name represents another important milestone in this project.
“The new Matatiki: Hornby Centre is going to be a wonderful asset for the south-west of Christchurch, joining the Council’s network of community facilities,’’ Mr Cox says.
