Good news for latte lovers - the number of cafes and restaurants in Christchurch is almost back to pre-quake levels.

Christchurch City Council data shows there are now 836 cafes and restaurants registered in the city, compared with 911 in the year to June 30, 2010.

Council Team Leader Food Safety and Health Licensing Stephen Stout said more premises were opening in areas where there was strong population growth.

"Areas such as Lincoln Road and Church Corner have seen a number of new operations open in response to other developments in those areas that attract people," Mr Stout said.

"The Airport Spitfire Square development has also seen a number of new premises open to service this area and those moving past and through the airport."

The central city area was opening more food operations as businesses and their associated staff moved back into the CBD, and as suitable buildings became available for them to operate in.

"We do expect a number of premises to open in the CBD as the development of this area continues, however we do not know how this will impact on the suburban developments or overall numbers," Mr Stout said.
