The ultimate beach day out, Kite Day, is set to delight the crowds this Saturday at New Brighton Beach.

The free event, produced by Christchurch City Council, runs from 12 noon to 4pm on Saturday 1 February at the South Ramp car park and adjacent beach.

A colourful variety of kites will take centre stage in the sky, while Connor from The Hits FM will keep the entertainment rolling on the ground.

Events and Arts Manager Lucy Blackmore says the family-friendly event appeals to first-time kite flyers, hobbyists and seasoned pros alike.

“There’s plenty of space along the beach to spread out and have a go, no matter your level of experience. Spectating is also worth coming down for – and if you decide to join in the fun, there’ll be a pop-up kite shop to hand.

“For those keener on sandcastle building, Connor will be hosting a showcase to celebrate all the creative masterpieces. Get your friends and whānau together to make your mark.”

Ms Blackmore says all ages are encouraged to get involved, but there’ll be some giveaway goodies for the tamariki (kids).

“We’ll have Mr Whippy and a candyfloss stall at the event hub, and people are welcome to bring a picnic. There are also plenty of local eateries in New Brighton to enjoy.”

Getting there:

  • Consider taking the bus – via the Rolleston/New Brighton (#5), Hillmorton/Southshore (#60) or The Palms/New Brighton (#135) Metro service.
  • Ride your bike – a bike parking station will be located at the grassed area directly adjacent to the south ramp and basketball court. Staff will be posted there during the event
  • Carpool – the North Ramp car park will be open, and on-street parking is available by the beach and township. The South Ramp car park is closed to cars, except those displaying a mobility pass, for the event.
  • Mobility parking – vehicles displaying a mobility pass can park in the South Ramp car park (near the basketball court and war memorial). If all the mobility parks are occupied, please try the North Ramp car park.
