The Council’s Infrastructure, Transport and Environment (ITE) Committee is recommending some minor changes are made to St Asaph Street to improve its functionality.

The changes will cost about $210,000 and involve:

  • Traffic on St Asaph Street.

Minor changes are on the cards for St Asaph Street.

Modifying the parking bays so they are easier to get in and out of.
  • Installing extra loading zones for goods vehicles.
  • Installing additional cycle parking.
  • Modifying the tree pit kerb design so they cause less damage to car wheels.

Another option for more extensive change was considered by the ITE Committee. That option was put forward by the Central City Business Group and included provision for the reinstatement of about 53 parking spaces.

The ITE Committee sought feedback from the community on both options. Nearly 330 comments were received from the public, of which 265 voiced support for making only minor changes to St Asaph Street’s layout.

ITE Committee Deputy Chair Cr Mike Davidson said people who had submitted on the St Asaph Street changes had put a lot of time and effort into their submissions and the Committee was grateful for their input.

“Many of the submitters raised concerns about the safety of the existing street layout and the Committee has taken those concerns on board. We have recommended the Council investigate some additional safety measures that will hopefully make those using the road feel safer,’’ Cr Davidson said.

“The Committee is also recommending the Council begin consulting the public in the new year about lowering the speed limit on St Asaph St to 30km an hour.’’

The committee has also asked staff to investigate installing mobility parking to service St Asaph Street.

The Committee’s recommendations will be considered by the full Council at its meeting on 23 November.
