Nearly $1.5 million will be spent shoring up the old Bexley Landfill to prevent further erosion.

Acting on the recommendation of Christchurch City Council staff, the Three Waters Infrastructure and Environment Committee today has approved a plan for addressing the erosion problems on the old landfill’s estuary edge.

The old landfill will be contained by three layers of different-sized rock designed to contain it while also dissipating the force from the sea, waves and floodwaters.

This work will involve tonnes of rock to form a natural beach in order to protect the foreshore. This containment work will stop material dumped in the landfill from being washed into the estuary in a big storm event.
