Repair work on stormwater mains beneath Ferry Road has led to temporary changes to traffic movement and parking in the area.
Christchurch City Council is currently enlarging manholes on Ferry Road to provide better access to the stormwater mains.
The access is needed for the next phase of the project, which involves relining the existing pipe.
Enlarging the manholes requires the excavation of Ferry Road near the intersection of Ensors Road and Aldwins Road.
All traffic lanes on Ferry Road, Ensors Road, and Aldwins Road have speed restrictions while work is underway. There is a speed limit of 30km/h near the construction sites.
There are right-turning restrictions at the intersection and side roads. There are no right turns from Ferry Road into Aldwins Road (coming from the east) and into Ensors Road (coming from the west).
Businesses in the area remain open, and customers can access businesses via Ferry Road. Customers can also park on Frederick Street.
Stormwater work at the intersection is underway and is expected to be completed by the end of February, with underground relining work further along Ferry Road to follow.
Workers will return to the intersection in March to complete the underground stormwater repairs.
Traffic signals and cables are also being replaced at the Ferry Road, Ensors Road, and Aldwins Road intersection.
Safe speed platforms will be installed at the intersection as part of the transport project. The additional transport work is expected to begin at the end of February and take approximately five weeks.
Head of Three Waters Brent Smith says the Council appreciates the patience and understanding of motorists and business owners in the area.
“The stormwater mains work is critical and needs to be done over the summer while water flows are at their lowest.
“Unfortunately, the disruption to businesses and motorists cannot be avoided as this work is essential. We’re doing our best to make the disruption as minimal as possible,” he says.
