Explored Christchurch’s city centre lately?

If you haven’t, you are likely to notice significant changes.

“The central city rebuild has reached a point now where you can really get a feel for what it is going to be like when all the construction work is finally finished,’’ says Central Ward Councillor Deon Swiggs.

“There are new buildings, new shops, new cafés, new laneways, new courtyards - and a new vibe. The rebuild has created some fantastic people places which are adding a real sense of excitement and vibrancy to the city centre,’’ says Cr Swiggs.

This month Christchurch City Council is encouraging people to take advantage of the parking options available in the central city to do some exploring.

There are more than 3500 parking spaces in the central city – about 2120 off-street parking spaces and 1700 on-street metered parking spaces.

“There is a perception that finding a park in the central city is difficult but with the Innovation parking building and the recent opening of the West End carpark, the Hereford Street carpark and The Crossing carpark the retail area of the city centre is actually very well served by parking buildings,’’ says Council Transport Operations Manager Aaron Haymes.

“When the Lichfield St parking building opens later this year another 805 parking spaces will be added to central city capacity so there’s plenty of options for people if they are coming into the city by car,’’ Mr Haymes says.

“We have been working to improve access to the city centre and have stepped up our monitoring of temporary traffic management to make it as easy as possible for people to come in and explore and do business in the central city.’’
