Drummonds Jetty in Akaroa will be rebuilt as part of Christchurch City Council’s Marine Structures Renewal Programme.
The 33m jetty is situated off Beach Road, Akaroa, near the main Akaroa Wharf.
Damaged decking and debris was removed late last year to make the deteriorating structure safe.
Christchurch City Council Head of Parks Andrew Rutledge says Drummonds Jetty will be rebuilt in the same location and remain the same length, 33m, but will also include a few updates.
“To make the new jetty more user friendly, the width will increase from 2.4m to 3m. It will also be one level, rather than stepped like it is currently. The new Drummonds Jetty will sit level with the height of the adjacent shoreline, effectively raising the level of the whole structure,” says Mr Rutledge.
Work is expected to get underway in 2024 and will be completed ahead of the Akaroa Wharf replacement project beginning.
The renewed Drummonds Jetty will temporarily be used by commercial and recreational marine users while the main Akaroa Wharf is replaced.
Two temporary floating pontoons will be installed at the end of Drummonds Jetty, connected via a gangway.
“After consulting with the community we determined that installing temporary pontoons will ensure there’s enough space on Drummonds Jetty to accommodate users while Akaroa Wharf is being upgraded, and allow larger vessels to dock in deeper waters,” says Mr Rutledge.
The next phase of the project includes developing a design for the new Drummonds Jetty and working with commercial and recreational users, as well as Beach Road businesses that operate near the jetty, to outline a plan for how Drummonds Jetty will be used while the Akaroa Wharf replacement work is underway.
