A stampede of elephants is coming Christchurch’s way.

The Laura Fergusson Brain Injury Trust is joining forces with Wild in Art and leading UK-based independent children’s publisher Andersen Press to bring a new sculpture trail to the city inspired by the multi-coloured patchwork elephant Elmer.

The creation of celebrated children’s author and artist David McKee, Elmer lives amongst a grey herd and initially tries to hide his true self, but eventually finds that his friends love him for his uniqueness. The Elmer series books, which promote positive messages about inclusivity, kindness, compassion and friendship, have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.

“We are incredibly excited to bring David McKee’s much-loved elephant character, Elmer the Patchwork Elephant, to life in what will be the city’s most colourful art trail yet,’’ says Kathryn Jones, Chief Executive of the Laura Fergusson Brain Injury Trust.

“Over 30 large elephants, individually designed by professional and emerging artists, will be displayed through the streets, parks and public spaces of Christchurch and the surrounding towns from November 2023 to March 2024.’’

Calls for sponsors, artists and schools to be involved in the art trail will be made in the coming months.

Wild in Art managing director Charlie Langhorne says they are excited to be returning to Christchurch and teaming up with the Laura Fergusson Brain Injury Trust and publisher Andersen Press to create Elmer’s Ōtautahi Elephant Trail – their third event in the city.

Previous events have included the Pop-Up Penguins art trail in 2020/21 and and the Christchurch Stands Tall Giraffes in 2014.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for businesses, the creative sector and communities to come together to create something very special,” he says.
An auction of the sculptures following the trail will ultimately help raise funds for the Laura Fergusson Brain Injury Trust. At any one time, the Trust is assessing, supporting and rehabilitating more than 1000 Cantabrians with brain, spinal or other complex injuries.

Paul Black, Public Relations and Brand Director at  Andersen Press, the publisher of the Elmer book series, says they are thrilled to be bringing Elmer to the streets of Christchurch.

“We hope that we can spread Elmer’s messages of acceptance, inclusivity and friendship and raise lots of money for the Laura Fergusson Brain Injury Trust.”
