Public feedback is being sought on a proposal to formally stop unused or rarely used roads around the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor.

The Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor (OARC) once held more than 5,000 homes with an extensive road network.

Over time, as these roads have no longer been required, they have been closed to the public, says Christchurch City Council Residential Red Zone Manager Dave Little.

“This is to both deter anti-social behaviour and to allow for the naturalisation of the corridor. We are now looking at officially stopping roads that fall into these three categories:

  • Roads that are already closed to vehicles: Locksley Avenue at the Landy Street access point, Kingsford Street from Broomfield Terrace to Tasman Place and the entirety of Tasman Place.
  • Roads that are currently open to vehicles but have no residents: parts of Kingsford Street and Broomfield Terrace, Brooker Avenue and Stour Drive, the Hulverstone Drive intersection with Chardale Street.
  • Roads that are currently open to vehicles and with a limited number of residents: Cheam Street north and Cheam Street south.

“More information about each of these roads can be found on our website. Community feedback will be used to inform the final proposal,” says Mr Little.

Consultation closes on 8 December.

Following consultation, traffic assessments will be carried out on the roads supported for stopping, with a decision report to be taken to the Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board in February 2025.
