Public consultation opens today on Christchurch City Council’s plan to make improvements at two intersections on Moorhouse Avenue.

Moorhouse Avenue is one of Christchurch's busiest transport corridors, with around 24,000 vehicles passing through each day. It is also a key route for people walking and cycling to and from Ara and the central city.

Proposed changes to the intersection at Moorhouse Avenue, Gasson Street and Madras Street:

  • Installing a new staggered ‘green man’ crossing on the east side of the intersection with a waiting area in the current raised central median.

  • Removing the north-west slip lane from Moorhouse on to Madras and replacing this with a left turn lane controlled by traffic lights.

  • Installing priority crossings and speed humps on the existing slip lanes from Gasson Street onto Moorhouse Avenue and from Moorhouse Avenue onto Gasson Street.

  • Repainting road markings, including cycle lanes.

Proposed changes to the intersection at Moorhouse Avenue, Barbadoes Street and Waltham Road:

  • Installing a new staggered ‘green man’ crossing on the east side of the intersection with a waiting area in the current central median strip.

  • Installing a priority crossing and speed hump on the existing slip lane from Moorhouse Avenue on to Waltham Road.

  • Repainting road markings, including cycle lanes.

Council Transport Operations Manager Stephen Wright says the proposed changes are aimed at helping people get across Moorhouse Avenue safely and efficiently.

“We’re taking a look at our infrastructure now to make sure it can accommodate the increased movement of people and vehicles in the future.”

“In addition to making the intersections safer for Ara students and anyone else moving around this busy part of town, we also expect large numbers to pass through these intersections to attend events at the new stadium when it opens in April 2026.”

If approved, construction is expected to start in late 2025.

Submissions on the proposed intersection upgrades can be made until 21 April 2025.
