A cutting-edge project wins the Datacom Award for Digital Local Government.

Smart Christchurch was presented an award at the LGFA Taituarā Local Government Excellence Awards on Thursday evening for a trial of an early fire detection sensor network in Waitākiri Bottle Lake Forest.

The technology was also highly commended in the overall Supreme Award category.

The fire detection network reduces the risk of a fire in one of Christchurch’s most popular recreational spots, using artificial intelligence and Internet of Things technology to monitor conditions within the park.

Christchurch City Council Manager of Smart Christchurch Michael Healy says he’s thrilled the self-powered sensors received this award.

“It’s fantastic to see the project gain this recognition, as it helps to protect a special part of Christchurch city.

“The technology will help protect the forest, neighbouring properties, the environment and wildlife of the Waitākiri Bottle Lake Forest Park.”
