One of Christchurch’s iconic bridges is getting some TLC and a fresh coat of paint.

The Carlton Mill bridge, at the corner of Harper Avenue and Park Terrace, dates back to 1929 and carries more than 26,000 vehicles a day.

“The Carlton Mill bridge is 93-years-old and needs a bit of TLC. It has a few surface cracks which need repairing and it is due for a fresh coat of paint,’’ says Christchurch City Council Transport Planning and Delivery Manager Sharon O’Neill.

“The bridge is currently painted a yellow cream but that’s not a colour that stands up well to the dirt and grime that comes from having high volumes of traffic moving across the bridge each day.

“The main part of the bridge will be painted grey with dark green features as that will reduce the amount of cleaning we need to do on the bridge,’’ says Ms O’Neill.

Most of the work on the bridge will be carried out at night and there will be minimal disruption to traffic.

The footpath over the bridge will be kept open while the work is done.mes from having high volumes of traffic moving across the bridge each day.
