T20 international cricket, festivals and music - this weekend has it all.

Don't forget to vote!

If you haven't yet returned your voting papers for the local elections yet, you've got till noon on Saturday to do so. 

Completed voting documents can be returned to Christchurch City Council Civic Offices, 53 Hereford Street, open Christchurch City Council libraries and service centres. 

Voting closes at noon Saturday so make sure you adding voting to your Saturday morning schedule.

International cricket at Hagley Oval

The Blackcaps kick off their season this weekend with a T20 Tri Series versus Bangladesh and Pakistan at Hagley Oval. 

The series is a forerunner to the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup in Australia and a great chance for cricket fans to see some the best international players competing at New Zealand’s best cricket ground. 

On Saturday, the Blackcaps take on Pakistan while on Sunday they play Bangladesh, with both matches starting at 7.10pm. Tickets cost from $5 to $20.

Skate the city

Learn how to skate like a girl and wheelie explore the central city. Gap Filler are running a free Skate the City event on Sunday aimed at teaching girls how to skate or skateboard and have fun on wheels.

Long board champion Elissa Mah and Phatsk8 founder Ingrid Phelan will be running the session, sharing their tips and tricks.  Skates and skateboards will be provided or you can bring your own.

You must be aged 12 or over to take part in the session. If you are interested in coming along, meet at the corner of Oxford Terrace and Manchester Street at midday and register.

Christchurch Heritage Festival

The doors to some of Christchurch’s most cherished historical landmarks are being thrown open this weekend as part of Christchurch Heritage Festival 2022.

You can see inside the Cashmere home of New Zealand’s most acclaimed mystery writer Dame Ngaio Marsh, visit the studio of acclaimed artist Bill Sutton, and join a guided tour of the Observatory Tower and Astronomy Dome at the Arts Centres. 

Alternatively, you could take a Spirited Cemetery Tour and learn some of the grave secrets buried at St Mary’s Anglican Church Cemetery in Halswell.

There are dozens of Christchurch Heritage Festival events on this weekend so make sure you check out the programme.

Days of Ice

Days of Ice, the annual festival celebrating Christchurch’s connections with Antarctica is drawing to an end, but there are still lots of ice-related events on this weekend to keep families entertained.

Tūranga is hosting a Gateway Antarctica Day on Saturday where you can spot penguins from space or build and program a robot explorer, using Lego sensors and motors, that can collect an ice core.

If the weather is nice, you might want to pop through the tunnel to Lyttelton and take part in the Lyttelton Antarctic Window Hunt. Pick up an entry form from the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre or Lyttelton Library and using your powers of observation, hunt out items with an Antarctic theme in shop and business windows in Lyttelton.

Bright Sparks - Shayne Carter and the NZSO

One of New Zealand's most talented singer/songwriters is teaming up with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra on Saturday night for a special concert in the Town Hall. Bright Sparks will weave Carter's favourite classical music with reimagined orchestral versions of his songs. 

The two hour concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets are priced from $15.  Book through Ticketek.

Brass band concert

Come along and support young brass and percussion players from 48 secondary schools throughout the country at their one and only concert.

You will be blown away by the sound and skill of the 2022 National Secondary Schools’ Band, who will be performing an entertaining programme featuring many styles of music. 

The concert is at the YMCA Theatre, 12 Hereford Street from 2 to 4pm on Saturday afternoon. Tickets cost $10 to $15.
