Council updates  |  17 Jul 2022

With strong winds expected today and tomorrow, Christchurch City Council is urging people to spend some time today getting prepared for bad weather.

From this afternoon an active front moving up the South Island is going to bring strong winds. There is a risk of gusts of more than 80km/h for higher parts of the Port Hills and Banks Peninsula, increasing to more than 100km/h tomorrow. The rest of the city could also experience strong winds on Monday.

“Now is the time to take some extra precautions to prepare for the potential of strong winds tonight and tomorrow,” says Christchurch City Council Civil Defence and Emergency Management Manager Brenden Winder.

“If you have large outdoor items or garden furniture that might get blown around in high winds, think about how you can secure them or move them inside.

“It’s also a good idea to keep pets inside and check in with those around you who may need assistance in getting prepared.’’
