Summer Sundays returns to the idyllic Christchurch Botanic Gardens this February.
The popular, free concert series produced by Christchurch City Council will take over the Archery Lawn every Sunday afternoon, from 2–16 February 2025.
Manager of Events and Arts Lucy Blackmore says Summer Sundays offers a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy live music.
“People dance, chat and picnic while the music plays. It’s a great way to unwind on a sunny Sunday afternoon.”
The first concert on 2 February, themed Movie Tunes, is headlined by Ōtautahi 10-piece band CAPITOL CITY, who will play hits from the cult classic film The Blues Brothers.
The Folk & Country Vibes concert on 9 February will feature three acts: Tess Liautaud and Band, The Kay Duncan Band, and The Wax Birds.
“They’re all strong songwriters, so expect to be introduced to a captivating range of original music at that one,” Ms Blackmore says.
“Our annual classic, Jazz on the Lawn will then round out the series on 16 February, with Jennine Bailey and her band performing Beatles hits with a jazz and blues twist, along with WooHoo Trio bringing a Latin jazz flavour and King Tubbs who take on hits by legends like The Doors, Jimi Hendrix and JJ Cale.
“We’re very fortunate with the local music talent in Ōtautahi, and Summer Sundays is about supporting and showcasing that talent, both established acts and up-and-coming artists. It’s always a fun time and draws a large crowd of all ages.”
People are encouraged to bring chairs or picnic blankets and their own food and drink, but no glass.
Summer Sundays runs from 1pm – 4pm each Sunday from 2–16 February.
