The refresh of Graham Condon Recreation and Sports Centre is on track, with the gym and main sports hall re-opening today.

The remainder of the centre – including pools – will re-open in early April 2020.

Christchurch City Council Head of Recreation, Sports and Events Nigel Cox says facility users will be impressed with the refresh so far.

“We have refurbished the reception area, including the toilets, and the gym change rooms. The fresh paint, new flooring and new energy efficient lighting have also spruced the facility up after nearly a decade of constant use by the community.”

The gym equipment remains the same and no changes have been made to the main sports hall.

Mr Cox says while there is still significant maintenance to be carried out on the pools, including tiling repairs and work on the toilets and change rooms, the project is progressing well.

“We thank the community for their ongoing patience as this work is completed. The facility has been used a lot since opening in October 2011 and this deferred maintenance will keep it modern, efficient and well-maintained for continued use.”

All of Council’s recreation facilities are part of a scheduled maintenance programme to keep the assets in good condition for the community. Over the last two years refurbishments have also been carried out on Pioneer and Jellie Park Recreation and Sports Centres.

While the remaining work is completed on the Graham Condon pools, the community are encouraged to use Jellie Park Recreation and Sports Centre and Taiora QEII or the Council’s outdoor pools, which are open over the summer.
