Christchurch City Council wants to hear your views on the best ways to develop and improve Urumau Reserve on the lava flow ridge above Lyttelton.

"We are putting together the Urumau Reserve Development Plan and welcome your feedback and ideas,” Council team leader, asset management and parks, Brent Smith says.

“Our consultation period is open until 4 September, 2017. We are also hosting an information session on Monday, 28 August from 7pm to 9pm at the Banks Peninsula Board Rooms at 25 Canterbury Street in Lyttelton.”

Feedback is being sought on the Urumau Reserve Development Plan.

Sited to the east above Lyttelton, the 26-hectare reserve already features mountain bike and walking tracks. A walking route also links with the Port Hills track network.

“We want to put together a development plan that protects and encourages greater use of the reserve. We want to get community views on the ideas to develop more tracks and improve access points, including the Timeball Station.”

Urumau Reserve is also home to a variety of birdlife and several indigenous ecosystems, ranging from dry and rocky to humid higher slopes with drought-tolerant trees and shrubs. Native planting, passive regeneration, a conifer plantation and pest control are key priorities in the new plan.

“We hope your ideas can help us balance the needs of the reserve, including improved recreational and educational opportunities, better public access and use, landscape and birdlife enhancement and weed control,” Mr Smith says.

Public feedback will ensure the plan better reflects the multiple community needs.

You can make comments and suggestions on the development of Urumau Reserve via Have Your Say from now until Monday, 4 September at 5pm.
