Christchurch and Banks Peninsula residents in need of assistance in accessing essential household goods and services due to the COVID-19 lockdown can get help via a local helpline.
The 0800 24 24 11 helpline will be run by Christchurch City Council staff and will operate around-the-clock.
“The helpline is a one-stop shop for the vulnerable people in our communities who may be having trouble accessing essentials such as food and medication,’’ says Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel.
“It is there to provide welfare support to those who are struggling and in need extra help during the COVID-19 lockdown.
“The helpline is intended for those facing hardship and is offered in addition to a range of other support measures provided by other agencies, particularly the Ministry of Social Development,’’ Mayor Dalziel says.
“When people call in they will get help to access essential supplies or they will put in contact with other relevant Government agencies who are already working to deliver particular services. We want to ensure everyone is looked after during this difficult period and the helpline is one way we can provide support and reassurance to people,’’ the Mayor says.
“I would request that if you are able to provide for yourself at this time, please help by keeping the line free for those who need urgent assistance.’’
