The Christchurch Hip Hop Summit is bringing live performances, workshops and exhibitions to Tūranga, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū and other venues until Saturday.

Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, the summit brings together new and established singers, dancers, DJ’s, artists and MC’s along with industry members to celebrate and explore hip hop as an art form and a cultural movement.

There is a packed schedule of events and a strong focus on youth engagement with free workshops from legendary artists and lunchtime “tiny desk” performances Monday to Thursday at Tūranga. Register here for the workshops.

Some of the highlights include:

  • Fashion show, 5-6pm and market stalls 4-8pm in the TSB Space at Tūranga on Wednesday 12 October, celebrating the role of women in Christchurch hip hop.
  • Breakdancing workshops, keynotes and battles on Thursday 13 October at Tūranga delivered by Christchurch’s world championship-winning dance crew Common Ground.
  • Established artist showcase 6-10pm on Friday 14 October in the TSB Space at Tūranga.
  • The Convention Market on Saturday 15 October 11am-4pm on the courtyard at the Christchurch Art Gallery with food trucks, barbers and braiders, sneaker and basketball card trading and pop-up stalls.

“We are proud to be supporting this fantastic event. It presents our young people with opportunities to develop and showcase their skills by attending and participating in workshops, keynotes and performances throughout the week in a beautiful and central location,” says Carolyn Robertson, Christchurch City Council Head of Libraries and Information.

“There has been such a positive atmosphere of learning and fun the past few days. It’s great to see events like this having the same limelight as the more mainstream festivals and forms of art seen at libraries and art galleries.”

Organised by Red Ngaia- Setu and Tommy Tomoniko of Youth Cultural Development Council with financial support from the Council, the Christchurch Hip Hop Summit runs until Saturday 15 October. Visit the event Facebook page for full artist information.
