Find out when you need to put your wheelie bins out over the 2023/2024 Christmas holidays and check out opening hours for pools, libraries, fitness centres and other Council facilities.

Kerbside collection

  • All bin collections will be a day later than usual for the weeks beginning Monday 25 December and Monday 1 January
  • Please put your bin out by 6am on the day after your usual bin collection day, more information here

Eco-drops and transfer stations

  • All Eco-drops and transfer stations will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day

Recreation and Sport Centres, Summer Pools and He Puna Taimoana

  • All Council owned recreation and sport centres will be closed from 6pm Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day. Normal hours will resume from Wednesday 3 January
  • The stadium at Pioneer will be closed from 17 December to 8 January, and Cowles Stadium will be closed from 15 December to 7 January while the courts are resurfaced
  • He Puna Taimoana will be closed on Christmas Day. The last session on 24 December at 31 December will be 3pm, and the hot pools will operate with normal hours between 26 December and 30 December

Jellie Park will be open:

  • From 7am – 8pm between 26 December and 30 December, and 7am – 6pm on New Year’s Eve
  • On New Year’s Day opening hours will be from 10am – 8pm
  • Between 2 January and 7 January opening hours will be 7am – 8pm
  • The hydroslides will be open from 12pm – 6pm over this period

Graham Condon will be open:

  • From 7am – 8pm between 26 December and 30 December, and 7am – 6pm on New Year’s Eve
  • On New Year’s Day, opening hours will be from 10am – 8pm
  • Between 2 January and 7 January opening hours will be 7am – 8pm

Pioneer’s indoor pools will be open:

  • From 7am – 8pm between 26 December and 30 December, and 7am – 6pm on New Year’s Eve
  • On New Year’s Day, opening hours will be from 10am – 8pm
  • Between 2 January and 7 January opening hours will be 7am – 8pm
  • The fitness centre will be open from 7am – 7pm between 26 December and 30 December, and 7am – 6pm on New Year’s Eve. On New Year’s Day, opening hours will be from 10am – 7pm, and opening hours between 2 January and 7 January will be 7am – 7pm.

Taiora QEII will be open:

  • From 7am – 8pm between 26 December and 30 December, and 7am – 6pm on New Year’s Eve
  • On New Year’s Day, opening hours will be from 10am – 8pm
  • Between 2 January and 7 January opening hours will be 7am – 8pm
  • The hydroslides will be open from 10am – 6pm between December 26 and January 7, except for New Year’s Day when they will open at 10:30am

Te Pou Toetoe Linwood Pool will be open:

  • From 7am – 8pm between 26 December and 30 December, with the exception of 27 December when the pools will be closing at 2:30pm
  • On New Year’s Eve, opening hours will be 7am – 6pm, and on New Year’s Day, opening hours will be from 10am – 8pm
  • Between 2 January and 7 January opening hours will be 7am – 8pm, with the exception of 3 January when the pools will be closing at 2:30pm
  • The manu pool will be open from 8am – 8pm on 26 December, 8am – 2:30pm on 27 December, 8am – 8pm between 28 December and 30 December, 8am – 6pm on 31 December, 10am – 8pm on 1 January, 8am – 8pm on 2 January, 8am – 2:30pm on 3 January, and 8am – 8pm between 4 January and 7 January

Outdoor Summer Pools at Waltham, Lyttelton, Templeton and Te Hāpua Halswell Centre will be open:

  • From 11:30am – 7pm between 26 December and 30 December
  • On New Year’s eve, opening hours will be 11:30am – 6pm, and from New Year’s Day, opening hours will be from 11:30am – 7pm
  • The hydroslide at Te Hāpua Halswell and Waltham will be open from noon to 6pm over the summer period

Libraries

  • All libraries will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and 2 January
  • Library hours differ across Christchurch, view all 2023/24 library holiday hours here

Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū

  • The Christchurch Art Gallery will be closed on Christmas Day
  • Over the rest of the holiday period, it will be open during usual hours (10am – 5pm Thursday – Tuesday, 10am – 9am Wednesday)

Service desks

  • The Civic Reception Desk on Hereford Street, Riccarton, Shirley, Papanui and Linwood Service Centres are closed on public holidays only
  • Akaroa, Fendalton and Little River Services Centres and the Civic Cash Desk are closed from Christmas Day until Wednesday 3 January
  • Lyttelton, Hornby and Beckenham Service Centres are closed from Christmas Day until Monday 8 January
  • Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre service desk is closed on Christmas Day only and is on reduced hours of 11.30pm to 6pm on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve
