Find out when you need to put your wheelie bins out over the 2024/2025 Christmas holidays and check out opening hours for pools, libraries, fitness centres and other Council facilities.

Kerbside collection

  • There's no bin collection on Christmas Day and New Year's Day
  • From 25 December to 5 January, Wednesday – Friday collections will be a day later (Thursday – Saturday). There are no changes to Monday in Tuesday collections
  • Please put your bin out by 6am, more information can be found on our website

Eco-drops and transfer stations

  • All Christchurch EcoDrop Resource Recovery Centres will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day

Recreation and Sport Centres, Summer Pools and He Puna Taimoana

  • All Council owned recreation and sport centres will be closed from 6pm Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day, except for Lyttelton and Templeton Summer Pools which will still be open to season pass keyholders on December 25. Normal hours will resume from Monday 6 January
  • Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre will undergo a multi-staged closure so scheduled maintenance and refurbishment work can be carried out. The stadium is currently closed, and all other parts of the facility will close on 6 January
  • Cowles Stadium is currently closed until 6 January

  • He Puna Taimoana will be closed on Christmas Day. The last session on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve will be 3 – 5pm, and the hot pools will otherwise operate with normal hours throughout the holiday period.

Jellie Park will be open:

  • From 7am – 8pm between 26 and 30 December, and 7am – 6pm on New Year’s Eve
  • On New Year’s Day opening hours will be from 10am – 8pm
  • Between 2 and 5 January opening hours will be 7am – 8pm
  • The hydroslides will be open from 12 – 6pm over this period

Graham Condon will be open:

  • From 7am – 8pm between 26 and 30 December, and 7am – 6pm on New Year’s Eve
  • On New Year’s Day opening hours will be from 10am – 8pm
  • Between 2 and 5 January opening hours will be 7am – 8pm

Pioneer’s indoor pools and fitness centre will be open:

  • From 7am – 8pm between 26 and 30 December, and 7am – 6pm on New Year’s Eve
  • On New Year’s Day opening hours will be from 10am – 8pm
  • Between 2 and 5 January opening hours will be 7am – 8pm
  • Pioneer will be closed for maintenance and renewal work from 6 January

Matatiki Hornby Centre will be open:

  • From 7am – 8pm between 26 and 30 December, and 7am – 6pm on New Year’s Eve
  • On New Year’s Day opening hours will be from 10am – 8pm
  • Between 2 and 5 January opening hours will be 7am – 8pm

Taiora QEII will be open:

  • From 7am – 8pm between 26 and 30 December, and 7am – 6pm on New Year’s Eve
  • On New Year’s Day opening hours will be from 10am – 8pm
  • Between 2 and 5 January opening hours will be 7am – 8pm
  • The hydroslides will be open from 10am – 6pm over this period

Te Pou Toetoe Linwood Pool will be open:

  • From 7am – 8pm between 26 and 30 December, and 7am – 6pm on New Year’s Eve
  • On New Year’s Day opening hours will be from 10am – 8pm
  • Between 2 and 5 January opening hours will be 7am – 8pm
  • The manu pool will be open from 10am – 8pm between 26 December and 5 January, except for on New Year’s Eve where closure time will be 6pm

The Summer Pools at Waltham and Te Hāpua Halswell Centre will be open:

  • From 11.30am – 7pm between 26 December and 5 January, except on New Year’s Eve where closure time will be 6pm
  • The hydroslide at Waltham will be open from 12 – 6pm over this period, and the hydroslide at Te Hāpua Halswell will be open from 12 – 7pm except on New Year’s Eve where closure time will be 6pm

The Summer Pools at Templeton and Lyttelton will be open:

  • From 7am – 8pm daily for season pass keyholders, including Christmas Day
  • From 11.30am – 7pm between 26 December and 5 January for casual pool users, except on New Year’s Eve where closure time will be 6pm

Please check the Rec and Sport website before your visit in case of unforeseen changes.

Libraries 

  • All libraries will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day
  • Library hours differ across Christchurch, view all 2024/25 holiday hours on the Christchurch City Libraries website

Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū

  • The Christchurch Art Gallery will be closed on Christmas Day
  • Over the rest of the holiday period, it will be open during usual hours (10am – 5pm Thursday – Tuesday, 10am – 9am Wednesday)
  • Amazing art exhibitions and activities all through the summer

Service desks

  • The Civic Reception Desk on Hereford Street, Akaroa and Little River Service Centre are closed from Christmas Day until Friday 3 January
  • The Riccarton, Shirley, Papanui, Fendalton and Linwood Customer Service Centre are closed on public holidays only (Linwood will be open at reduced hours on 27, 30 and 31 December and 3 Jan (10am – 5pm)
  • Lyttelton and Beckenham Customer Service Centre are closed from Christmas Day until Monday 6th January
  • Te Hāpua Halswell Customer Service Centre is closed on Christmas Day only and is on reduced hours of 11.30pm to 6pm on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve
  • Matatiki Hornby Customer Service Hub is closed on Christmas Day and is on reduced hours between 24 December and 5 January (24 December: 5.30am – 6pm, 26 to 30 December: 7am – 8pm, 31 December: 7am – 6pm, 1 January: 10am – 8pm, 2 to 5 January: 7am – 8pm)
