A clearway trial around Christchurch Hospital is about to get underway.
The trial will begin on Monday 10 March and run for six months. The clearway will be on Hagley Avenue, between St Asaph Street and Riccarton Avenue.
It will be in place between 7.30am and 7.30pm daily, meaning the lane will be open to normal traffic flow during these hours. The lane will be used for approximately 18 free on-street parking spaces, between 7.30pm and 7.30am each night.
The trial was requested by Councillor Aaron Keown and was approved by the Finance and Performance Committee at its meeting on 18 December 2024. It will assess the feasibility of allowing nighttime-only parking in this section of Hagley Avenue.
“This trial will help us understand the impact of permanently converting the kerbside lane of Hagley Avenue into a free parking area, including showing the effects on traffic flow, congestion levels, overall feasibility and how this might affect everyone using the road,” Transport Operations Manager Stephen Wright said.
“The trial will be marked out by signage and road markings. This means it is possible for us to end the trial early if we get feedback that something isn’t working.
“We’ll work closely with Hato Hone St John to ensure their access to the Emergency Department is not affected,” he said.
“Keeping the lane clear during the day will be a key factor during the trial.
“We’re asking people to please ensure that they have left the parking spaces before 7.30am each day, as the lane needs to be returned to regular traffic flow.
“If you’re not certain you’ll be able to move your vehicle before 7.30am, please find an alternative place to park in the area.
“We’ll be seeking public feedback towards the end of the trial and we’ll be keen to hear from stakeholders around the intersection, as well as people who have made use of the free parking,” says Mr Wright.
As the trial concludes, the results will be analysed and a report will go back to the elected Council for a decision.
