Christchurch City Council has received the findings of an independent review into the Council’s response and recovery from the wastewater treatment plant fire.
The review was commissioned in response to concerns about the early stages of the Council’s response, Acting Chief Executive Mary Richardson says.
“We wanted an independent view of our response and recovery operations to help us understand what we could have been done better, and what needs to be improved or changed in our response to future events.”
“The fire and subsequent stench had a significant impact on our communities. Our technical response was outstanding – the team was able to keep a badly damaged plant operating – and are continuing to do so every day. But our response and information to the local community was too slow. We have learnt lessons from this and want to ensure we do not repeat mistakes.”
“We recognise that re-building trust with the eastern communities will take time, and will require a concerted effort and resources from the Council,” says Ms Richardson.
“There is a strong and committed local Community Board and local Councillors who have continued to be strong advocates and voices for the community.”

The Council is now working with key stakeholders and community representatives to address the findings of the review. This will be published alongside the review when it goes to a future Council meeting for approval.
