Adopting nine-year-old Dozer was one of the best things to happen to Jay Lowe last year.

The pair go hand in glove and Jay knew Dozer was the perfect fit the moment they met.

“I was looking for a dog. I’m big on responsible breeding and rescuing so I had my heart set on a rescue dog – I thought I better check out the Animal Shelter,” Jay said.

“He’s so calm and knows who he is which is just such a sweetheart, the sweetest boy, I knew he was the one instantly.”

And while Dozer may be an older dog, Jay said he certainly doesn’t act like a 9-year-old.

“He’s really helped me getting out and doing more things, going for walks, going to the dog park and meeting new people. doing things like that makes you feel better about yourself.”

Jay Lowe and "total sweetheart" Dozer

Dozer needed a bit of dental work done but Jay said the Animal Shelter team were open about that from the beginning.

“The team really helped out with that, so it was more manageable financially,” Jay said.

“I absolutely would encourage anyone looking for a dog to have a look at adopting a rescue, it’s so cool to be able to give a dog at home.”

Christchurch City Council Animal Services Manager Lionel Bridger said like with Jay and Dozer the team works hard to make sure the dogs end up in loving new homes.

“When you adopt a dog from the Animal Shelter, you can always be assured they are in good health, vaccinated and the costs are minimal. We want the best outcome for everyone involved and will go over and above.”

Dogs for adoption are posted on the Christchurch City Council Facebook page.

You can reach the Shelter on 03 941 7048 or pop in to visit at 10 Metro Place, Bromley.
