The epic tale of King Arthur gets a quirky re-telling during this year’s Anthony Harper Summer Theatre.

Rollicking Entertainment have come up with a fresh and funny take on the traditional English story and will be bringing it to life on the Murray Aynsley Lawn of the Botanic Gardens from 27 February to 17 March.

“With knights, a holy grail, a wizard, a magical lake and swashbuckling sword fights this year’s production of King Arthur is sure to capture the audience’s imagination,’’ says Christchurch City Council Events and Arts Manager Karena Finnie.

“It’s going to have all the fun of a pantomime and lots of clever lines that will also keep the adults in the audience entertained.

“Anthony Harper Summer Theatre is traditionally one of SummerTimes’ most-loved events. It is a great way to introduce people to the world of live theatre and I’m sure it will be hugely popular with families again this year,’’ Ms Finnie says.

King Arthur will be performed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights from 6.30 to 8.30pm, beginning Wednesday, 27 February. At the weekends there will be shows at 2pm and at 6.30pm. The finale performance of King Arthur will take place at 2pm on Sunday, 17 March.

There is no admission charge, but koha donations will be gratefully accepted by Rollicking Entertainment.

The Murray Aynsley Lawn is in the Botanic Gardens, near the Heritage Rose Garden by Christchurch Hospital.
