New swimming pools, a library, the Canterbury Multi-Use Arena, and a new home for The Court Theatre are all provided for in the Draft 2021-31 Long Term Plan.

Over the past 10 years, we’ve completed a massive programme of repairs and rebuilds to our earthquake-damaged facilities. In addition to new facilities planned by the Council to meet the needs of growing communities around our city, we’re also investing in replacing damaged facilities.

We propose spending $550.3 million, with a further $197.7 million coming from the Government, on new community facilities over the next 10 years. This includes:

  • Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood Pool ($8.3 million remaining)
  • Hornby library, customer services and south-west leisure centre ($31.8 million)
  • Performing Arts Precinct ($34.8 million)
  • Metro Sports Facility ($21 million remaining, as well as funding from the Government)
  • Canterbury Multi-Use Arena ($253 million, as well as $197.7 million from the Government)

We’re also investing in our existing comprehensive network of facilities across Christchurch and Banks Peninsula.

Our strategy is to operate and maintain these facilities so they remain valued and well-used places for our community to come together. We propose spending $541 million on existing community facilities over the next 10 years, including:

  • Libraries
  • Recreation and Sport Centres
  • Parks
  • Public toilets
  • Wharves
  • Community centres
  • Community halls
  • Voluntary libraries
  • Early Learning Centres
