Christchurch’s new City Promenade will be officially opened at 10am this Sunday.

The 2km promenade follows the Avon River from the Christchurch Hospital through to the Margaret Mahy Family Playground and is designed to give people improved access to the river and make it a feature of the central city.

Sunday will be the first day people will be able to walk the promenade from end to end.

Ōtākaro Limited is celebrating the promenade’s completion by holding scavenger hunt with $10,000 worth of prizes on offer from the neighbouring businesses, including a $5000 Discover Travel voucher.

“To make opening day extra special we’ve got 20 musical acts playing throughout the day along the Promenade as well as face-painting, eel feeding and food trucks to keep you entertained and energised while searching for the answers to the 10 simple scavenger hunt questions,’’ says Ōtākaro Chief Executive John Bridgman.

“The official opening will take place near the Pegasus Arms at 10am, then you will be able to grab an entry form and start your stroll to the other end of the Promenade where you will find an entry box for the completed forms.

“Entry forms will also be available near the Margaret Mahy Family Playground if you wish to walk, bike, or scooter from that end. Just make sure to get your entry form in the boxes at either end of the Promenade by 4pm on Sunday. Ōtākaro staff will be stationed throughout the Promenade in bright green t-shirts, ready to help with clues,’’ Mr Bridgman says.
