A new date for popular community event, Kite Day, has been announced.
The event will now take place on Saturday 13 January, from 11am – 3pm at New Brighton Beach, shifting from an early February slot.
“There’s a lot of exciting events happening in Ōtautahi Christchurch this summer and we’ve decided to bring Kite Day forward into the school holidays,” says Council Manager of Events and Arts Lucy Blackmore.
“New Brighton Beach was going to be jam packed with the Coast to Coast happening the same weekend Kite Day was scheduled for, so we’ve decided to space our event out to help manage the crowds both on the beach and accessing New Brighton itself,” Ms Blackmore says.
The free community event sees kites of all shapes and sizes taking to the skies above New Brighton.
“There are always a huge range of colourful kites on display, ranging from giant sea creatures to the traditional shapes and sizes.”
“People can bring their own kites or browse the options on sale at the Kite Shop on the day,” says Ms Blackmore.
People are also encouraged to bring picnics, friends and whānau.
“Kite Day is a great excuse to enjoy a picnic on the beach or pop into a local New Brighton café. There will also be free family entertainment during the event as well,” says Ms Blackmore.
Metro’s Yellow bus and routes 60 and 135 stop in New Brighton. Bike stands will be located south of New Brighton Library, and parking is available along New Brighton promenade.
