Local boaties are excited about work beginning next month to rebuild the South New Brighton jetty.

The current wooden jetty was knocked around in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes and sustained further damage in a severe storm during 2013.

The Council has approved $400,000 to build a replacement and the project will be carried out by Christchurch-based contractor Solutions 2 Access.

Boaties are pleased the damaged South New Brighton jetty is going to be rebuilt.

Christchurch City Council Project Manager Mike Sheffield said deconstruction of the existing jetty will start in a few weeks and work on the new one will start from the end of April.

“There’s always been a need for it and the community and Council have worked together to reinstate it as quickly as we can, putting back like for like.

“They’ll be taking existing decking off and removing the existing piles and installing new ones that are longer and more robust. They’ll put back the structure recycling some of the timber from the old jetty - up to 40 per cent of the existing structure will be re-used.”

The local yacht club, kayakers and the wider boating and fishing community were eager for a replacement, he said.

The new structure will have a floating plastic pontoon at the far end that will rise and fall on the tide.

Pleasant Point Yacht Club treasurer Jocelyn Humphreys said the floating pontoon would be fantastic for junior sailors, giving them easy access to the water at all times. It will also be used for starting races out in deeper water.

“Working with the council and being asked for ideas to put towards the rebuild means that the new jetty design is going to be better than it was before for us. People love watching activities on the water and just being close to the water, so the jetty really is a major community asset.”

The old structure had screws and nails on the outside which meant it was not very “boat friendly”, she said.

Pleasant Point Yacht Club recently built a new boat ramp and is currently fundraising for a new clubhouse to replace one that was fatally damaged in the 2010 earthquake. It will be built on a site at South New Brighton Park.

The new jetty is expected to be completed in late July or August this year depending on weather conditions.
