A tsunami warning has been issued for the east coast of the North Island but there is no tsunami threat to the South Island.

Christchurch Civil Defence Emergency Management has been monitoring the potential tsunami threat following the 7.1 magnitude earthquake off East Cape this morning. 

Following advice from the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management this morning it has been confirmed there is no threat to the South Island.

The tsunami warning is still in place for the east coast of the North Island, including Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

In those areas people are being advised to:

  • Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities) 
  • Stay off beaches and shore areas
  •  Do not go sightseeing
  • Share this information with family, neighbours and friends
  • Listen to the radio and/or TV for updates
  • Follow instructions of local civil defence authorities
