Find out when you need to put your wheelie bins out over the Christmas holidays and check out opening hours for pools, libraries, fitness centres and other Council facilities.

Kerbside collection

  • Because Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day all fall on the weekend, there will be no change to wheelie bin collection this year.

Eco-drops and transfer stations

  • All Eco-drops and transfer stations will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Recreation and sport centre

  • All Council owned recreation and sport centres will be closed from 6pm on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day.
  • The Graham Condon fitness centre and indoor pools will be open from 7am to 8pm between 26 December and 30 December. On 31 December they will be open from 7am to 6pm. On 1 January they will be open from 10am to 8pm. Between 2 January and 4 January they will be open between 7am and 8pm. Normal hours will resume on 5 January.
  • The Pioneer fitness centre will be open from 7am to 7pm between 26 December and 30 December. On 31 December the fitness centre will open from 7am to 6pm.  On 1 January the fitness centre will open from 10am to 7pm. Between 2 January and 4 January the fitness centre will open from 7am to 7pm. 
  • Pioneer's indoor pools will be open from 7am to 8pm between 26 December and 30 December.  On 31 December the indoor pools will be open from 7am to 6pm.  On 1 January the pools will be open from 10am to 8pm, while from 2 January to 4 January they will open from 7am to 8pm.
  • Taiora QEII will be open from 7am to 8pm from December 26 to 30 and from 7am to 6pm on 31 December.  On New Year's Day opening hours will be from 10am to 8pm.  Between 2 January and 4 January Taiora QEII will be open from 7am to 8pm. Please note the hydroslide's opening hours over the Christmas/New Year period will be from 10am to 6pm.
  • Jellie Park's fitness centre and indoor pools will be open from 7am to 8pm between 26 December and 30 December, and from 7am to 6pm on New Year's Eve. They will open from 10am to 8pm on 1 January. From 2 January to 4 January the pools and fitness centre will be open from 7am to 8pm. Jellie Park's hydroslides will be open over the Christmas/New Year period from noon to 6pm.
  • Te Pou Toetoe Linwood indoor pools and spa will be open from 7am to 8pm between 26 December and 30 December. On 31 December they will be open from 7am to 6pm. On 1 January they will be open from 10am to 8pm. Between 2 January and 4 January they will be open between 7am and 8pm. Normal hours will resume on 5 January.
  • Te Pou Toetoe Linwood Manu Pool will be open from 8am to 8pm between 26 December and 30 December. On 31 December it will be open from 8am to 6pm. On 1 January it will be open from 10am to 8pm. Between 2 January and 4 January it will be open between 8am and 8pm. Normal hours will resume on 5 January.
  • Summer Pools at Waltham and Lyttleton will be open from 11.30am to 7pm between 26 December and 30 December. On 31 December they will be open from 11.30am to 6pm. On New Year’s Day opening hours will be 11.30am to 7pm, while from 2 January to 4 January they will open from 7am to 8pm. The hydroslides will be open over the Christmas/New Year period from noon to 6pm.
  • Te Hāpua Halswell Summer Pool will be open from 11.30am to 7pm between 26 December and 30 December. On 31 December it will be open from 11.30am to 6pm. On New Year’s Day opening hours will be 11.30am to 7pm, while from 2 January to 4 January it will also open from 11.30am to 7pm. The hydroslides will be open over the Christmas/New Year period from noon to 6pm.
  • Pioneer Stadium and Cowles Stadium will be closed from Tuesday 14 December to Tuesday 4 January.
  • Normal hours will resume at all Council owned recreation and sport centres on Wednesday 5 January.

Libraries

  • All libraries will be closed on Saturday 25 December (Christmas Day), Sunday 26 December (Boxing Day), Monday 27 December (Christmas Day observed), Saturday 1 January (New Year’s Day), Sunday 2 January (New Year Holiday) and Monday 3 January (New Year’s Day observed).
  • On Tuesday 28 December (Boxing Day observed) all libraries will be closed except Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre which will be open between 10am to 4pm; Papanui open between 10am to 4pm; and Tūranga open between 10am to 5pm.
  • On Tuesday 4 January all libraries will be closed except Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre which will be open between 10am to 4pm; Papanui open between 10am to 4pm; and Tūranga open between 10am to 5pm.
  • Little River Library will close on Friday 24 December at 4.30pm and will reopen on Wednesday 5 January at 8.30am.
  • The mobile library will close on Friday 24 December at 2.15pm and will reopen Monday 10 January at 10am.
  • Normal hours will resume at all libraries on Wednesday 5 January.

Christchurch Art Gallery

  • The Christchurch Art Gallery will be closed on Christmas Day. Over the rest of the holiday period it will be open from 10am to 5pm daily.

Civic Offices

  • The Civic Offices in Hereford Street will be closed from 5pm on 24 December until 29 December. They will be open from 9am to 5pm from 29 December to 31 December. The offices will be closed again from 1 to 4 January 2022. Normal hours will resume from 5 January.

Service desks

  • Papanui Service Centre, Riccarton Service Centre and Shirley Service Centre will be closed from 5pm on 24 December until 29 December. They will be open from 9am to 5pm from 29 December to 31 December. The offices will be closed again from 1 to 4 January 2022. Normal hours will resume from 5 January.
  • The service desks at the Fendalton, Akaroa, Beckenham, Hornby, Linwood, Little River and Lyttelton will be closed from 5pm 24 December 2021 reopening on 5 January 2022.
  • Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre service desk will only be closed on Christmas Day. On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, it will be open from 11.30am until 6pm. All other days the desk will operate from 11.30am until 7pm.

  • The Council Contact Centre will be open 24 hours, seven days a week throughout the Christmas-New Year period. Call 941-8999 or 0800 800-169.
