Check when you need to put your wheelie bins out over the Christmas holidays and find out about opening hours at pools, libraries, fitness centres and other Christchurch City Council facilities.

Kerbside collection

  • Most wheelie bins will be emptied as usual over the Christmas/New Year period as Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on a Friday.
  • If your bin is normally emptied on a Friday, your collection day will move to Saturday.
  • All kerbside collections will take place on the normal days of the week beginning from Monday 4 January.

Eco-drops and transfer stations

Pools, recreation and sport centres

  • All Council-owned recreation and sport centres will be closed from 6pm on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day.
  • Graham Condon fitness centre and indoor pools will be open from 7am to 8pm from 26 to 30 December and from 7am to 6pm on New Year’s Eve. On 1 January they will open from 10am to 8pm. From 2 January to 4 January the fitness centre and indoor pools will be open from 7am to 8pm.
  • Pioneer fitness centre will be open from 7am to 7pm between 26 and 30 December. On 31 December, it will open from 7am to 6pm, while on New Year’s Day it will open from 10am to 7pm. From 2 to 4 January the fitness centre will be open from 7am to 7pm. Please note that the indoor pools at Pioneer are closed until May while essential maintenance work is done.
  • Taiora QEII's fitness centre and pools will open from 7am to 8pm between 26 December and 30 December. On New Year's Eve they will open from 7am to 6pm, while on New Year's Day they will be open from 10am to 8pm. Between 2 and 4 January, the fitness centre and pools will be open from 7am to 8pm.
  • Jellie Park's fitness centre and pools will be open from 7am to 8pm between 26 and 30 December. On New Year's Eve they will open from 7am to 6pm and on New Year's Day from 10am to 8pm. Between 2 and 4 January the fitness centre and pools will open from 7am to 8pm.
  • The Lyttelton and Waltham outdoor pools will be open from 11.30am to 7pm between 26 and 30 December.  They will open on New Year's Eve from 11.30am to 6pm and on New Year's Day from 11.30am to 7pm. Between 2 and 4 January the pools will open from 11.30am to 7pm.
  • The outdoor pool at Te Hapua Halswell will be open from 9.30am to 7pm between 26 and 30 December. On New Year's Eve the pool will be open from 9.30am and 6pm and on New Year's Day it will be open from 10am to 7pm. Between 2 and 4 January the pool will be open from 9.30am to 7pm.
  • Normal hours will resume at all Council-owned pools, recreation and sports centres, except for Cowles Stadium, from 5 January. Cowles Stadium will be closed from 14 December to 10 January because its floor is being resurfaced. It will reopen on Monday 11 January. 

Libraries

  • All libraries will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, 28 December, New Year's Day, 2 January and 4 January.
  • On Sunday 27 December Tūranga will be open from 10am to 5pm; all other libraries will be closed.
  • From Tuesday 29 December to Thursday 31 December all libraries will open as normal and close at 6pm (or their usual closing time if it is earlier).
  • On Sunday 3 January 2021 Tūranga will open from 10am to 5pm; all other libraries will be closed.
  • Normal hours will resume at all libraries from Tuesday 5 January.

Christchurch Art Gallery

  • The Christchurch Art Gallery will be closed on Christmas Day. Over the rest of the holiday period it will be open from 10am to 5pm daily.

Civic Offices

  • The Civic Offices in Hereford Street will be closed from 5pm on 24 December until 29 December. They will be open from 9am to 4pm from 29 to 31 December. The offices will be closed again from 1 to 4 January 2021. Normal hours will resume from 5 January.

Service Centres

  • The Papanui, Riccarton and Shirley Service Centres will be closed from 5pm on 24 December until 29 December. They will be open from 9am to 5pm from 29 to 31 December. They will be closed again from 1 to 4 January 2021. Normal hours will resume from 5 January.
  • The service desk at Te Hapua will close at 6pm on 24 December and reopen at 9am on the 26 December. Between 26 and 30 December, the service desk will be open from 9am to 7pm. On New Year's Eve it will be open from 9am to 6pm. On New Year's Day it will open from 10am to 7pm. On 2 and 3 January it will open from 9.30am to 7pm, with normal hours resuming on 4 January.

Contact Centre

  • The Council Contact Centre will be open 24 hours, seven days a week throughout the Christmas-New Year period. Call 03 941 8999 or 0800 800-169.

Animal management services

  • The last free microchipping service for 2020 is Wednesday 16 December from 11am to midday. The service will resume on Wednesday 13 January. This free service is for dogs currently resident and registered in the Christchurch area.
  • The animal shelter will be closed on statutory holidays, but otherwise will be open weekdays 1 to 5.30pm and on Saturday by appointment only. Please note the Saturday appointments are for claiming dogs only, not for viewing dogs for adoption. 
  • Animal management officers will be on duty throughout the holiday period and will be available on call for urgent public safety jobs.
  • Dog owners are urged to provide well for their pets over the holiday season, ensuring that they will receive adequate food water and shelter throughout.
