There will be more time to splash around in Christchurch City Council’s outdoor pools when they open for the summer on Saturday 16 November.

Life guard hours have been extended at Te Hāpua Halswell Summer Pool and an end-of-season membership has been introduced for the first time at Lyttelton’s Norman Kirk Memorial Summer Pool. A new membership system is also in place at Templeton Pool, while the Waltham Summer Pool and outdoor pools at Jellie Park Recreation and Sport Centre will be open for business as usual.

Head of Recreation, Sports and Events Nigel Cox is keen to see the community get in behind the new membership systems and take advantage of the additional opening hours at Halswell, which are part of a one-year trial and have been funded by the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board.

“The community will enjoy the extended opening hours. There’s nothing more Kiwi than summer nights in the pool with your family and friends.”

Te Hāpua Halswell Summer Pool will be open Monday to Thursdays from 6.30am until 7pm, on Fridays from 6.30am until 9pm and on Saturday and Sundays from 10am until 7pm.

The end-of-season membership at Norman Kirk Memorial Summer Pool will see residents able to buy a membership valid from 1 February 2020 until 29 March 2020 for $80. They can still opt for a full season membership, running from 16 November 2019 until 29 March 2020, for $160 if they prefer.

Lifeguards will only be based at the pool from 16 November 2019 until 2 February 2020, between 11.30am and 7pm, during which time casual users are able to access the facility.

“The newly introduced end-of-season membership will be great for people who are away over the holiday period, but want to utilise it once they are back home” Mr Cox says.

All five of Council’s outdoor pools will close on 29 March 2020.
