Christchurch City Council’s Animal Management team are advising pet owners to be mindful of others this summer.

“Pets are part of our families and it’s great to be able to enjoy time with them over summer, but it’s important to be aware of restrictions for where you can or cannot take your dog,” says Animal Services Manager Lionel Bridger.

“If you’re heading to the beach, ensure your dogs and controlled and don’t cause a nuisance to other people using the area.”

To protect swimming and recreation activities, there are restrictions in place until 31 March. Dogs are prohibited within 100 metres on either side of the Surf Life Saving Clubs at Spencer Park, Waimairi Beach, North Beach and South Brighton Beach from 9am to 7pm.

There are a variety of restrictions in place for New Brighton Beach, Sumner Beach, Taylor’s Mistake and Banks Peninsula swimming spots.

Dogs can pass through these prohibited areas as long as they are on a short leash. Your pooch must also be on a leash on the footpath at all times.

Your dog is allowed to run free on any reserve or park across Christchurch and Banks Peninsula that is not a leashed or prohibited area, but your dog must be under control and well-behaved.

“We often see an increase in fireworks being used over the Christmas and New Years period, so ensure your pets are secured in the evenings,” says Mr Bridger.

“We want to make sure everyone in Christchurch has a safe and happy time over summer, including our furry friends.”

If you lose your dog over the Christmas period, please call the Animal Shelter on 03 941 7048. The Shelter will be available over Christmas and New Years.
