Christchurch City Council is seeking the community’s views on its plans for making Linwood Village a more welcoming, people-friendly space.

“We’re proposing a package of streetscape changes along Stanmore Road that we hope will result in Linwood Village having a more inviting, neighbourhood feel,’’ says Council Head of Transport Lynette Ellis.

“We want people to feel comfortable and safe when they visit the shops and businesses in Linwood Village and we want them to feel that it is the heart of their community.

“By enhancing the streetscape of Linwood Village we hope to make it a place where people want to be,’’ Ms Ellis says.

The streetscape improvements proposed by the Council focus on safety, with wider footpaths, dedicated cycle lanes, better lighting, more trees, and improved landscaping all featuring in the plan.

Key features of the plan include:

  • Installing raised crossing platforms, with tactile paving, at the intersection of Stanmore Road and Hereford Street and the intersection of Stanmore Road and Worcester Street.
  • Installing a raised, paved courtesy cross on Stanmore Road between Hereford and Worcester streets so it is easier and safer for pedestrian to get across the road.
  • Installing new bus shelters at both bus stops, with raised kerbs to make it more accessible for those entering and exiting buses.
  • Creating 1.8 metre wide on-street cycle lanes in both directions on Stanmore Road and installing 12 new cycle stands.
  • Changing the parking restrictions south of Gloucester Street from P30 to P10 to increase parking turnover.
  • Planting 27 new trees on both sides of Stanmore Road and three in the central island of the Hereford Street roundabout and adding landscaping along the rest of the area.
  • Reducing the speed in Linwood Village to 30km an hour to make it safer for everyone.

“It is really important to us that, before we proceed any further, that we hear what Linwood residents think of the changes we are proposing for the area. People can give their feedback via Have Your Say until 2 March,’’ Ms Ellis says.

The Council has nearly $2 million on budget for the improvements to Linwood Village. It hopes to begin work in the area in early 2023.
